ABOUT
Hadewych van Gent is a versatile and cellist and singer. At the age of 12 she started studying at the Jong Top-Talent department of the Conservatory of Amsterdam. There she studied with prof. Monique Bartels and played intensely with the prestigious string ensemble ‘’The Fancy fiddlers’’ lead by Coosje Wijzenbeek, giving weekly concerts in The Netherlands as well as abroad. During that period she also sang in the National Children’s Choir, performing in prestigious venues in The Netherlands and Europe.
The following years Hadewych continued her studies with prof. Jelena Očić at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Next to her love for the cello and the classical repertoire she took an interest in exploring improvisation, singing, playing in different genres and participating in many interdisciplinary projects. After a very successful graduation in Amsterdam she started studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London with honoured prof. Robert Cohen.
In September 2022 Hadewych was invited by cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason to play and sing on his album release. The performance of the piece that she arranged, sung, improvised and played, was described in the Times as ‘An intoxication invocation’’.
Currently a recipricantt of the prestigious Bicentenary scholarship Hadewych is studying voice and cello with Hannah Roberts in the Advanced diploma at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She looks forwards to recording an album with Linn records where she will uniquely combine singing and playing the cello.
Throughout her career Hadewych has performed in many different concert halls playing solo and with chamber groups in places like het Concertgebouw, het Muziekgebouw aan t’IJ, the Dutch national Opera and the Barbican. In 2020 she was a special guest at Radio 4. She had the pleasure of playing on ‘The YPF competition’’ with a string ensemble as well as leading the cello section in the finals of the competition under the baton of Jean-Bernard Pommier. Next to that Hadewych played in many masterclasses, festivals and concerts abroad in countries like Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Italy and England.
She has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with great musicians such as Max Richter, Menahim Pressler, Edward Gardener, Sir Mark Elder, Jaap van Zweden, Reimbert de Leeuw, Andreas Ottensamer, 12 Ensemble and Janine Jansen, playing in her festival several times. A great enjoys ongoing collaborations with Sheku Kaneh-Mason and Plinio Fernandes.
Hadewych plays a cello built by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, kindly lend to her by the Royal Academy of Music.
